THE PROJECT
Create designed More Creative in 2008 to bring together adults with learning disabilities who attend Bede House with local schoolchildren in the London Borough of Southwark to break down barriers, learn new skills and develop shared understanding.
Working under the guidance of our professional artists, these creative workshops enable participants to develop social skills, trust and supportive relationships, enhance self-confidence and self-esteem, and have fun.
THE NEED
More Creative addresses the need for positive integration of people with disabilities within society. Research has shown that disabled people are significantly less likely to participate in cultural, leisure and sporting activities than non-disabled people.
Furthermore, Scope’s Current attitudes towards disabled people report revealed that: 67% of the British public feel uncomfortable talking to disabled people; 36% of people tend to think of disabled people as not as productive as everyone else; and 24% of disabled people have experienced attitudes or behaviours where other people expected less of them because of their disability. The report ultimately argues that much of the discomfort people feel about disability may stem from a lack of understanding, and both the general public and disabled people believe that more everyday interactions will increase understanding and acceptance of disabled people.
