The Ministry of Justice has found that maintaining family ties can reduce the likelihood of reoffending by 39% (‘Reducing reoffending: supporting families, creating better futures’, 2009). Finding ways to interact positively with their children is integral to the development of both the prisoner and these children.
Taking part in creative arts activities can bring numerous benefits to prisoners, helping them develop skills, express themselves, boost their confidence, and build and improve family connections. Koestler Arts suggests that the arts can provide prisoners with a “springboard for positive change”.
Former prisoner, writer and Create Patron Erwin James says: “Evidence that the likelihood of reoffending is reduced through prisoner involvement in art, drama [and] music is strong.”
