An artist activity for Create Week created by Holly Khan. Children should only do this activity under adult supervision.
Step 1
- Find an unused water bottle (check the recycling).
- Find something that could make a nice sound. How about paper clips, buttons, scrunched-up card or kitchen foil? Place in the bottle. (Children should ask an adult to help find these items, and make sure they’re not too small.)
- Secure the lid and—TA-DA—you have yourself a shaker.
- Feel free to decorate the outside.
Step 2
Think of your favourite food. Be specific! If it’s pizza, what type of pizza? Now say it out loud and use your shaker to say the phrase, for example:
MA-CA-RO-NI AND CHEESE!
Step 3
With your home-made shaker or your hands and feet, try and play the rhythms below.
Special tip: Say the phrase out loud first and say it whilst playing
Step 4
Complete this sentence starter to create your own lyrics:
MUSIC MAKES ME…
Think of as many words as possible
Step 5
Listen to your favourite song…
- What instruments can you hear?
- Can you hum the main tune?
- If the song has words, what are your favourite words and WHY?
- What do you like most about this song?
Step 6
- Pick a section of your favourite song (chosen in STEP 5)
- Create a movement for each lyric or phrase of music.
- How can your body represent the notes you hear?
- Teach the movement sequence to your friends and family!
