An artist activity for Create Week created by Paul Pickford. Children should only do this activity under adult supervision.
Materials:
- Plastic bottle (clean)
- Two pieces of scrap paper
- Two pieces of thicker paper
- A roll of sticky tape
- Scissors
- Pencil

Step 1
Add a little water to the plastic bottle to give the model some weight and make sure the lid is screwed on tightly.
Step 2
Scrunch the two pieces of scrap paper into balls, wrapping them tightly with the sticky tape and taping them to the bottle cap to make the penguins head.
Step 3
Draw a circle on the thicker paper of about a 4cm diameter. Draw a line from the centre of the circle to the edge then cut along this. Now fold the cut edge underneath and round to form a cone. Tape the cone to the head.

Step 4
Fold the piece of thicker paper in half then draw a wing shape on one side, about 12cms long, then adding a small rectangular tab to the top. You might ask for help in cutting the wing out as folding the paper in half does make it a little tougher to cut out, but you also get both wings cut out at the same time. Fold the tabs over, tape them to the penguins’ body so that it can flap its wings.
Step 5
Using the left over bits of thicker paper draw a couple of triangles of the same size then cut some semi circles out of them to make the webbed feet, add them to the model with sticky tape.
Think of other things you could add. Maybe a couple of buttons for eyes? Look at pictures in books and you’ll see that penguins come in different shapes and sizes, so you are ok to add your own colours and patterns to your model too!
